We wanted a fun, easy way to share video book trailers! With so many of our computers being used for testing,
and how long editing takes on iMovie, Vine sounded like the perfect solution! Everything we create is Creative Commons so feel free to Take, Use, & Share! For kiddos - Visit our Daring School Library Blog For Teachers & Librarians - Visit my Professional Daring Librarian Blog

In a small group, (3 is best!) choose a favourite book that you’ve already read. Brainstorm together how you could get readers interested in the book without giving it all away. Don’t try and summarize the story, just a few visual & fun ideas that will be intriguing or eye catching. Think of a movie trailer or a book blurb and how they can draw you into the story without giving away any spoilers! Make sure at some point you show the cover of the book and say the title –even if it’s for only 1-2 seconds.
Tech Tips
Remember, every time you touch the Vine screen, it stops & starts the action. Want to film a stop action video? Go for it! Or, 3 clips of 3 seconds of action works quite well. Expect to film this at least 3 times before you get the final one! Don’t forget to add hashtags to the description! Ex: #VinerBookTrailers, #BookTrailers, or perhaps #SummerReading
Vine Examples for Inspiration
Here's an example that Ms. Jones & Ms. VanderVeen came up with to show as an example.
Here's another one from a viner named CassielThom found by searching Vine for Book Trailer
from Mrs. VanderVeen's 7th grade period one class We recently got permission to film these in my school district using the Vine App!
(Thank you Robert Cole @racolej & Julie Wray! @jwwray!)
I am posting these under my name because of our Responsible Use Policy - Vine has been approved for
high school kiddos over 13 - but our kids are Middle Schoolers - So they create & I post.
Let me assure you that these videos are kid written, storyboarded, and recorded.
OK, I may help a little w/ some creative ideas here and there....but So cool, huh?

The idea is to keep them short & sweet. Name of the book - very important - something about the book without spoilers, & our hashtags.
Of course, we don't want to overdue the hashtags - we're pretty close as it is - unless it's done in an ironic snarky kinda way then that would be #hilarious
EXAMPLE Hashtags
Add #NameOfBook to your #SummerReading list! This book is really (Adjective - scary, funny, exciting, romantic, adventurous, page-turning etc.) #VinerBookTrailers #HCPSS @hcpss_mhms
allow you to plan out your digital story in a visual way. Look at what happens first, next etc onto the last scene (the timing)
communicate your ideas about the story
make a blueprint for your video before the production stage
organize and develop the focus of the story
allow you to see the entire sequence flow/continuity) of your video
allow you to see what you are doing - and what to keep and what to cut out (unnecessary scenes/pictures, dialogue, etc)
enable you to work out the interaction between images (the visual transitions)
enable you to work out any dialogue (voiceovers) for the images
enable you to work out the music that will “go with” the images and enhance the feel/emotion you are looking for.
Your drawings must have meaning and portray feelings/emotions.
A good storyboard will allow you to plan out the impact you intend to make on your audience.
Consider:
How long an image stays on the screen (2-3 seconds is often considered optimum)
With Vine videos you only have 6 seconds - use it wisely.
Every time you tap the screen, you record. This way you can do stop action animation!
Consider visual clues:
Low angle (viewer may get a sense of danger, threat, up against authority)
Or High angle (viewer may get a sense of being in charge of being above &separate from the action)
Close-up (can show feelings/emotions and the view identifies with the item in the close-up. It also means they don’t directly know what is happening around the item in the close up
or Wide angle (long shot) Often used to show action, to put a character/item in a landscape/place
Lighting and shadows – use to create emotion and feelings in the audience
